Important announcement regarding changes to access to GP Appointments

From the 3rd November 2025 we are changing how patients should book appointments.

FOR URGENT SAME DAY APOINTMENTS, please ring at 0830 in the usual way.

FOR ROUTINE APPOINTMENT REQUESTS which can wait up to 2 -3 weeks then please submit the new online form.

This will be triaged by reception or where needed by the GP. Where an appointment is needed, a booking link will be sent for you to book an appointment. A choice of clinicians will be offered. You may have to wait slightly longer for the clinician of your choice.

The online form can be found under the appointments tab, under appointment system. It does not require a log in.

The previous system of booking an appointment online without completing the form will be replaced by this new system so on the day appointments will no longer be available for online booking.

What is urgent and what is routine?

URGENT SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS

These will be available via the phone from 0830 in the morning for problems which require attention that day.

Examples: symptoms of chest infection, urinary tract infection, ear infections, skin infections. Urgent mental health problems. (Mental health crisis can call 111) Patient concerned about cancer, for example breast lumps, worrying bleeding. Palliative care.

Once the appointments are full, you may be advised to attend the walk in centre or 111 so that your urgent problem can be dealt with that day. Our receptionists can access bookable same day appointments at the walk in centre or local hub subject to availability.

Please consider seeing the community pharmacist for simple conditions such as ear infections, impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles, sinusitis, sore throats, urinary tract infection in women aged 16-64.

Receptionists will consult with the GP where these options are not appropriate for the patient.

ROUTINE APPOINTMENT REQUESTS

This will be the biggest change to our system.

We have previously reserved the vast majority of appointments for booking on the day. This does not suit everyone well and we hope that the new system will work better for those whose problem is not urgent for that day but can be dealt with within a 2 week period.

Examples: less urgent mental health issues, chronic conditions, medication reviews, follow up appointments.

ADMINISTRATIVE ENQUIRIES

Examples: Continuation of sick notes where appropriate

(These will be reviewed by the GP who can decide if appointment needed)

Enquiries about repeat medication.

(These will be reviewed by the pharmacy team)

EMERGENCY SERVICES

We are not an emergency service. For urgent and life-threatening emergencies, always ring 999.

For example: chest pain, symptoms of stroke, sudden onset shortness of breath, concerns about sepsis, accidents, seizures.

These changes have been necessary due to a contractual requirement for GPs to provide online consultations from the 1st October 2025.

We hope that there will be several advantages to this new system:

The phone lines should be less busy at 0830 for those who need a same day appointment, because others will be using the online forms.

Patients often say that they find having to ring at 0830 very inconvenient and unnecessary if they don’t need the appointment that day. This system will give much better access to routine pre-bookable appointments and offer a better choice of time and day for these than we have been able to do before.
